Local Gastroenterologist to Discuss Latest Info on Celiac Disease July 12You’ve may have seen the news stories about celiac disease and you’ve probably seen the “gluten-free” labels on some of your favorite Nature’s Bin products. If you’ve got questions about celiac disease and gluten free diets, join Dr. Owen Tully, a gastroenterologist from North Shore Gastroenterology to learn more!

Dr. Tully will talk about celiac disease, its symptoms, how it is diagnosed and the other diseases as which it may masquerade. Nature’s Bin will provide samples of many of the tasty gluten-free products available at the store.

If you have not yet signed up for the Akron Celiac Disease Conference please do so soon. It is just 2 weeks away!

Speakers will be Dr. Alissio Fasano of the Celiac Disease Research Center in Maryland, Dr Costas Kefalas of Akron Digestive Disease Consultants, Dr Cydney Fenton of Akron Children's Hospital Diabetes and Endocrinology Department, Dr Julie Smith of Akron Children's Hospital, Dietitian Trisha Lyons of Metro Health Medical Center and Pharmacist Steve Plogsted of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus.

In addition to the speaker program for adults we will have a children's program and a special program for parents and tots. The tot and children's activities will include a Bake and Take provided by Food-Tek, A visit from Akron Zoo with animals who eat gluten free, and more

We will have a small vendor fair before the conference and goodie bags for each person who attends.

Lunch is not included in the price of attending. The Hospital Cafeteria will be making 2 special gluten free lunch entrees and have gluten free bread available that day. A list of all of their gluten free items will be available the morning of the conference.

Space is limited and you must pre-register. To keep costs down, we will not be providing meals during the conference. However, you are free to enjoy gluten-free samples from numerous vendors. There is also a cafeteria adjacentto the auditorium. We are trying to make arrangements with them in advance to have a gluten free option available for lunch on that day.

Registration cost is $15 per adult and $10 per child. Discounts are available for those with financial need. Every preschool child must be accompanied by an adult for the entirety of the program. The adult caring for the preschooler is included in the child’s registration fee of $10.

There are several exciting things happening the next couple of months.

Saturday, October 10 there will be a gluten free tasting at Mustard Seed Market, both locations, Montrose and Solon.

Sunday October 12, we will skip our October meeting in hopes that you can attend one of the other events happening in our area.

October 31-November 2, The national Celiac Sprue Association Conference is taking place in Erie PA. It is just a stone's throw away.

Saturday November 7 or 8, (which ever day is Saturday) the Columbus Celiac Conference and Gluten Free Vendor Fair.

Over the past few months a number of drug companies have been telling people that some of the drugs that they manufacture contain gluten. When I investigated their claims it appears that the reason they are blatantly claiming that their drugs are contaminated is because they have used a sugar alcohol as an excipient.

Sugar alcohols are not truly sugars or alcohols rather they are carbohydrates that provide a source of calories. The sugar alcohols are naturally found in a number of fruits and vegetables and may be extracted from many sources including any starch, including wheat. During the manufacturing process they are completely refined leaving behind no gluten proteins similar to making table sugar. The mostly widely used sugar alcohols used in prescription drug manufacturing are mannitol and xylitol. Both of the products are used either as sweeteners in liquid drug products or as bulking agents in the solid dosage forms.

The sugar alcohols are used in many diabetic products as well as in many health foods such as nutrition bars. Any person who consumes one of the sugar alcohols in significant quantities can experience gastrointestinal disturbances and diarrhea which may mimic symptoms celiac patients may suffer after being exposed to gluten.

National celiac organizations such as the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America® consider mannitol to be safe for use in celiac patients. Additionally, if you go to the Celiac.Com website dated 11/29/07 you will find a list of items safe for the celiac patient to consume. On that list you will also find both mannitol and xylitol as well as the following sugar alcohols sorbitol, malitol, lactilol and isomalt.

What does this means for the celiac patient? If you happen to contact a drug company for information and you are told that a drug contains gluten you really need to push them to tell you which excipient in that drug product is considered the source of the gluten contamination. If it turns out to be one sugar alcohols you may wish to re-evaluate their response. While it is always up to the celiac patient to determine whether a product is safe for them, the prevailing literature continues to suggest that these sugar alcohols are safe for use.

Thyroid Disease often seen with Celiac Disease:
People with celiac are at increased risk for developing thyroid disorders including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and thyroiditis. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck that produces hormones to regulate the body’s metabolism. In hypothyroidism, the gland is underactive causing symptoms such as fatigue, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, and weight gain. In hyperthyroidism, the gland is overactive, causing symptoms such as excessive sweating, heat intolerance, and
nervousness. However, in mild cases of hypo- or hyperthyroidism no symptoms are present. Thyroiditis describes inflammation of the thyroid gland. Studies done in Sweden showed people with celiac disease had a greater than fourfold increased risk of being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a threefold risk of suffering hyperthyroidism, and a 3.6-fold increased risk of developing thyroiditis. The reverse was also true, with the same level of statistical significance, for an increased risk of celiac disease in people with established hypothyroiodism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroitid. The association was seen in all strata (males, females, children & adults). The positive association between celiac disease and thyroid disease may be due to shared genetic or immunological traits.

GF base for Cream Soups … a recipe from the Repository in Canton… “Heloise” that has been passed on through the Canton Support Group … Give it a try and let us know your thought on the finished product.
1 cup nonfat dried milk powder (rice milk powder can be substituted)
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons chicken bouillon powder
1/2 teaspoon dried basil, crushed
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
1/4-teaspoon black pepper
Mix all the ingredients and store in an airtight container. Makes 4 to 6 cups, depending on serving size.
When you’re ready to make the soup, put 2 cups water and the soup mix in a large saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick. Add the main ingredient of your choice and cook until done. If the soup is too thick, add more water. Season to taste.

Oven Roasted Red Potatoes
10- 12 small red potatoes, well washed
2 Tablespoons of olive oil
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon of pepper
2 Tablespoons of shredded Parmesan cheese
freshly diced scallions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees, placing a small casserole dish on the top rack.
Boil the potatoes for roughly 15-20 minutes, or until they're tender. Carefully! remove hot dish from the oven and transfer potatoes into it. Gently twist a fork into the flesh of each of the potatoes - letting it open up hopefully without breaking it in half, though, if you do, that's okay, too. Drizzle the olive oil over the potatoes, sprinkle spices and top with cheese. Bake for 20 - 25 minutes and serve with sliced scallions.

A Summary of Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance by Scott Adams
Celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance, is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 1331 Americans. Symptoms of celiac disease can range from the classic features, such as diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition, to latent symptoms such as isolated nutrient deficiencies but no gastrointestinal symptoms. The disease mostly affects people of European (especially Northern European) descent, but recent studies show that it also affects Hispanic, Black and Asian populations as well1. Those affected suffer damage to the villi (shortening and villous flattening) in the lamina propria and crypt regions of their intestines when they eat specific food-grain antigens (toxic amino acid sequences) that are found in wheat, rye, and barley3. Oats have traditionally been considered to be toxic to celiacs, but recent scientific studies have shown otherwise. This research is ongoing, however, and it may be too early to draw solid conclusions.
Because of the broad range of symptoms celiac disease presents, it can be difficult to diagnose. The symptoms can range from mild weakness, bone pain, and aphthous stomatitis to chronic diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and progressive weight loss.3 If a person with the disorder continues to eat gluten, studies have shown that he or she will increase their chances of gastrointestinal cancer by a factor of 40 to 100 times that of the normal population4. Further, gastrointestinal carcinoma or lymphoma develops in up to 15 percent of patients with untreated or refractory celiac disease3. It is therefore imperative that the disease is quickly and properly diagnosed so it can be treated as soon as possible.
Based on the figure mentioned above we can extrapolate the total number of people in the United States with celiac disease: 2.18 million (based on the total population: 290,356,0285). It is very important that doctors understand just how many people have this disease so that routine testing for it is done to bring the diagnosis rate in line with the diseases epidemiology. Testing is fairly simple and involves screening the patients blood for antigliadin (AGA) and endomysium antibodies (EmA), and/or doing a biopsy on the areas of the intestines mentioned above, which is still the standard for a formal diagnosis.
The only acceptable treatment for celiac disease is strict adherence to a 100% gluten-free diet for life. An adherence to a gluten-free diet can prevent almost all complications caused by the disease3. A gluten-free diet means avoiding all products that contain wheat, rye and barley, or any of their derivatives. This is a difficult task as there are many hidden sources of gluten found in the ingredients of many processed foods.
Celiac Disease Screening
Celiac.com 02/08/2007 - For anyone with a family history of celiac disease or of disorders such as thyroid disease, anemia of unknown cause, type I diabetes or other immune disorders or Downs syndrome, doctors may suggest routine screening. Otherwise, patients are generally screened on a case by case basis according to individual symptoms.
People with celiac disease have abnormally high levels of associated antibodies, including one or more of the following: anti-gliadin, anti-endomysium and anti-tissue transglutaminase, and damage to the villi (shortening and villous flattening) in the lamina propria and crypt regions of their intestines when they eat specific food-grain antigens (toxic amino acid sequences) that are found in wheat, rye, and barley.
Antibodies are the specialized proteins the immune system uses to break down and eliminate foreign substances from the body. In people with celiac disease, the immune system treats gluten as a foreign invader and produces elevated levels of antibodies to get rid of it, causing symptoms and associated discomfort.
Testing & Diagnosis
A blood test, such as anti-tissue transglutaminase and anti-endomysial antibodies, can detect abnormally high antibody levels, and is often used in the initial detection of celiac in people who are most likely to have the disease, and for those who may need further testing.
Since the immune system of a person with celiac treats gluten as a foreign substance and increases the number of antibodies, elevated levels of these antibodies are a sign of celiac disease.
To confirm the diagnosis, your doctor may need to do a biopsy, that is, microscopically examine a small portion of intestinal tissue to check for celiac associated damage to the small intestine. To do this, your doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) through your mouth, esophagus and stomach into your small intestine and takes a sample of intestinal tissue to look for damage to the villi (tiny, hair-like projections in the walls the small intestine that absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients).

Northeast Ohio Celiac Disease Conference at Akron Children's Hospital a Success

Thank you to all who attended and participated in the Celiac Disease Conference at Akron Children's Hospital on Sunday, April 26, 2009. We hope you enjoyed the day and collected much valuable information and goodies. Wasn't the vendor fair delicious?

We had over 250 people in attendance. There were 23 vendors. The vendors raised money for the Hospital's Digestive Disease Department and the Family Resource Center. Some of the vendors provided the center with additional books on Celiac and the gluten free diet.

There are several follow up things to be addressed.

There was a request for information on a local pharmacist familiar with Celiac Disease. We have 2 in the Akron Area that I know of. One is Margo Mishik. She has worked with the Akron Celiac Support group and arranged for pharmacist credits to be connected to the past conference.
She works at one of the Giant Eagle Pharmacies. I will check further on which one. The other, who I am embarrassed to admit I can not remember her name, works at CVS on Cleveland Massilon Road in Copley. She has Celiac and understands our needs.

The children's videos and photos. We ran into 2 problems. We did not get back the photo release forms from parents. If you have the form please send it to Therese at 640 Fairhill Drive, Akron 44313. In several cases I have the forms, but they were signed by the children or teens themselves. If the person is under 18 I need the form signed by a parent or guardian. Please email me at tsemonin1@neo.rr.com and I will forward the release on to you. We have some great photos that we would like to send on to be in the national Celiac publications, and we would like to post the photos online for you to see.

The videos did not turn out as well as we had hoped. We will try to splice and fix them so they can go on YouTube. This may not be possible. We will hold a video session at one of our regular support meetings for the children to remake these videos or to plan and present new ones. We will post in advance which meeting this will be.

Altieri's Pasta and Chicken at Sarah's Vineyard

April Fool's Day Dinner

There are still a few spaces left for the April 1 gluten free pasta and chicken dinner at Sarah's Vineyard on Wednesday April 1. Email Therese if you would like to come. Dinner is just $3.50 per person, and you purchase your own drinks at the winery. Dinner will arrive at 6:30 pay at the door.

Gluten Free Bread Baking Contest Tasty Recipes

Gluten Free French/Garlic Bread
2 cups plus 2 tablespoons Nearly Normal Flour mix (*listed below)
1 ½ teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2 teaspoon yeast
1 teaspoon vinegar or dough enhancer
2 egg whites
1 ½ cups warm water (110-115 degrees)
Mix first 4 dry ingredients in heavy duty mixer. Add yeast and a pinch of sugar to warm water and let sit for 2
minutes so yeast foams. Add egg whites to dry mix. After water has set for 2 minutes, add water mix to mixer.
Beat at medium speed for 3 minutes. Spoon dough into French bread mold, cover, and let sit 60 minutes.
Bake for 1 hour at 375. Then turn down oven to 325 and bake an additional 15 minutes. When cool, slice
bread at an angle. Spread with melted butter and garlic powder. Top with favorite cheese, grated. Bake in
400 degree oven about 10-15 minutes until cheese melts and browns. May be baked, sliced, buttered,
topped, then frozen. Then remove the bread by the slice and bake as you would any frozen garlic slices.
This recipe adapted from the Gluten Free gourmet cooks fast and healthy. Bette Hagman, but I use Jules Shepard flour mix.

*Nearly Normal GF Flour mix (Jules Shepard)
1 cup white rice flour
1 cup potato starch
1 cup cornstarch
½ cup corn flour
½ cup tapioca flour
4 teaspoon xanthan gum
Mix together and store in pantry.

Gluten Free Herb-Cheese Bread
Makes 1 medium loaf
3 large eggs, room temp
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
¼ cup olive oil
1 ½ cups warm water
Put wet ingredients in bread maker (unless machine instructions state otherwise)
Sift the following ingredients into large bowl:
1 cup brown rice flour
1 cup sweet sorghum flour
½ cup potato starch
½ cup tapioca flour
1/3 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon xanthan gum
3 tablespoons sugar
1 ½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
After sifting, add flour on top of wet mixture in bread machine. Then add:
¼ cup flaxseed
1 teaspoon Italian herbs or country herb mix (aldi’s)
¼ cup romano or asiago cheese, finely shredded
2/3 cup dry milk
2 ¼ teaspoon active dry yeast
Select the rapid white setting on bread machine, 1.5 loaf, dark crust.
Once machine is done kneading, reach in and remove paddle and smooth out dough. This is messy and
gooey but it makes removing the bread from the pan easier when it’s done and it is a much nicer loaf without a
big hole in the bottom. When bread is done, you may let it rest in machine or remove it and let it cool on a
rack. When cool, slice thinly and freeze the bread you will not use. I then toast the bread as I need it.

Banana Nut Bread
(makes 2 loaves)
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
¼ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
4 cups Nearly Normal Gluten Free Flour (flour mix with xanthan gum)
6 overripe bananas
1 cup walnuts
Preheat oven to 325.
Spray pans with cooking spray.
Cream together butter and sugar.
Beat in eggs, salt, and baking soda.
Mix in flour.
Beat in bananas.
Fold in nuts.
Pour in pans.
Bake at 325 for about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then remove.

Pleasing Pumpkin Bread
Ingredients:
4 eggs (beaten until very frothy)
1 ½ cup oil (I used canola)
2 cups sugar
2 cups pumpkin (I use plain canned—not canned pumpkin PIE filling)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 cups flour (*I use Nearly Normal Flour mix, see below)
1 teaspoon salt
2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon

nstructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Beat eggs until very frothy. Add other ingredients and mix well. If you use 9X5 loaf pans, they’ll need to bake
about 1 hour. Do not grease pans. When toothpick comes out clean, remove from oven. Let sit for 10
minutes, then remove from pans and set on cooling rack. These are easier to slice if refrigerated, and freeze
well.
We’ve tried adding ground flax seed in and it’s great, you can’t really taste it. Also, chocolate chips are very
good in there.

Banana Nut Bread
1 ¾ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 ½ teaspoons xanthan gum
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup vegetable oil
1 ½ cups sugar
¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1 cup chopped nuts
(No mixing or baking instructions were given for this recipe.)

Cinnamon Rolls
Start with True Yeast Bread:
3 cups flour mix (2 parts white rice flour, 2/3 part cornstarch, 1/3 part tapioca flour)
¼ cup sugar
3 ½ teaspoons xanthan gum
2/3 cup dry milk powder
1 ½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon sugar
½ cup lukewarm water
1 ½ tablespoon yeast granules
¼ cup shortening
1 ¼ cup water
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 eggs
Additionally, you will need:
1 stick margarine (approx.)
Additional sugar
Cinnamon
Combine flour, sugar xanthan gum, milk powder, and salt in bowl of heavy duty mixer. Use strongest beaters.
Dissolve the 2 teaspoons of sugar in the ½ cup lukewarm water and mix in the yeast. Set aside while you
combine the shortening and 1 ¼ cup water in saucepan and heat until shortening melts.
Turn mixer on low. Blend dry ingredients and slowly add shortening and water mixture and the vinegar. Blend,
then add eggs. This mixture should feel slightly warm.
Pour the yeast mixture into the ingredients in the bowl and beat at highest speed for 2 minutes.
Place mixing bowl in a warm place, cover with plastic wrap and a towel and let the dough rise approximately 1
to 1 ½ hours or until doubled.
Return to the mixer and beat on high for 3 mins.
Place about 1/3 of dough on buttered waxed paper. Lay another well-greased piece of waxed paper on top of
dough and roll out to about 1/3 inch thick rectangular shape.
Then spread mixture with melted margarine. Layer of sugar and sprinkle generously with cinnamon. With
well-greased hands, form a roll, carefully working the sticky dough from the waxed paper. Don’t worry if it does
not become smooth or look perfect.
Seal the roll and slice in about 1 ¼ inch pieces. Put pieces in muffin tins or pie pans that have an extra dab of
margarine on the bottom. Let rise,
Bake in a preheated oven of 375 for 13 minutes.

Northeast Ohio Celiac Disease Conference and Vendor Fair
April 26, 2009 You must preregister for this event. For more information type Conference in the search line, or call Therese at 330-608-8436. I will be away from email for the days between now and the conference.
April 1 2009, An evening out at Sarah's Vineyard in Cuyahoga Falls. Gluten-free fried chicken, jojos, pasta and salad from Altieri's Pizza in Stow for just $3.50 per person. Each person is responsible to purchase their own beverages at teh winery. Dinner will be at 6:30.

Dining out gluten free workshop and tasting of items by Celiac Specialties at Raisin Rack Natural Foods in Canton this Saturday March 28. You must preregister for the workshop by calling 330-996-1515. There will be an information packet on restraunts available for $5.00

Akron Aeros Baseball outings planned for Friday, May 8 and Sunday, June 28. Cost is just $10 per person for May 8 and $11 per person on June 28. The May evening includes a hot dog (gluten free if needed) popcorn and soda. The June event includes the same food, but no fireworks since it is midday.

Friday May 8 there will be fireworks following the game. We have also made arrangements for you to get a hot dog, soda and popcorn at this game. The tickets only would have been $6 per person, the ticket with the food is only $10. I had to choose all or nothing for this game, so they are making up all of the tickets to include the food. We still have the option of choosing food or no food for the June 28 game. That game is on a Sunday afternoon.

Akron Aeros Outings for Summer of 2009

We have scheduled 2 Akron Aeros outings for the Celiac support groups for 2009. We have tickets for Friday May 8. The evening game includes Fireworks. The second game is Sunday June 28. Tickets for the games are $5.50 each. We will again work out a special arrangement for gluten free hot dogs. More details will follow. Ticket orders will be taken starting April 2.

The Second Celiac Disease Conference in Northeast Ohio will be held on Sunday April 26, 2009. Watch for details soon. It will be held at Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron in the Considine Building. We are lining up great speakers and activities as well as a gluten free vendors fair. This will be a family oriented event with programs fo adults, teens, school age children and also a special parent and child program for preschool age children.

We have scheduled our first Celiac Presentation for 2009 at the Digestive Health Center with Dietitian Sally Phillips doing the presentation. The presentation will be held Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 5:30 in Ste 150 at the Digestive Health Center. Cost will be $10.00 per person. Sally will be presenting: Living the Gluten-Free LIfestyle with a focus on " What's in your fridge?" and how to use it. She and I have discussed expanding on resource sheets and Sally is developing new handouts.

As the holiday season quickly approaches, many of us are beginning to plan our special dinners. The menu needs to be thought out carefully to make sure that everyone on the guest list has their dietary needs met. For those with celiac, that means no gluten. Many of us may use traditional recipes for the main course such as a turkey or ham. Preparing and cooking the actual turkey or ham may be no problem. However, the challenge lies in purchasing the right meats.
To add flavor, some manufacturers inject basting solutions into their turkeys during processing and these solutions may contain gluten. As for the ham, many are basted with a glaze that contains wheat starch or use a gluten containing flour "rub" to seal in moisture during packaging. Unfortunately, this means that manufacturers may take something that is naturally gluten-free and turn it into a product that is a source of gluten. Therefore, celiacs must proceed with caution.
The best advice I can offer is to ALWAYS read the ingredient label! Sometimes, the label may have "gluten-free" indicated somewhere on the package. However, it isn't always that plainly presented and you will have to do a little more investigation! For example, if one of the ingredients is "modified food starch" or "malt extract" find out what the specific source is—it may be a modified corn starch or a corn malt extract, which would make the product gluten-free, or it may be a modified wheat starch, which would make it not gluten-free. Furthermore, do not purchase turkeys that come pre-stuffed because the stuffing mixture most likely contains gluten. Also, be careful with the use of gravy packets that accompany turkeys because these may contain gluten as well. If you have looked over the ingredient label but are still unsure, I recommend calling the manufacturer before buying. They are the best source of information regarding the product and they can provide the specifics about the ingredients, how the product is made and if cross-contamination is possible in their facility.
I researched which manufacturers sell gluten-free turkey and ham products, and contacted several companies to get confirmation. The following are companies that carry fresh or frozen turkeys and hams that are gluten free.
Butterball: Butterball Fresh Turkey and Butterball Fresh Breast of Turkey are all-natural and contain no added ingredients. The gravy packets that come with some Butterball Turkey products contain gluten and are indicated on the gravy packet label.
Honeysuckle White: The All Natural Whole Turkey, Fresh Bone-In Turkey Breast, Frozen Whole Turkey, Frozen Bone-In Turkey Breast are gluten free.
Jennie-O: Jennie-O Prime Young Turkey—fresh or frozen (the gravy packet contains gluten), Jennie-O Turkey Oven Ready Turkey Breast (the gravy packet contains gluten).
Empire Kosher Turkey Products: Empire Whole Frozen Turkey, Empire Frozen Turkey Breast are gluten-free along with many other products. To see the complete list, visit: www.empirekosher.com

Honey Baked Hams: According to their website, "they have reformulated their glaze to be considered free of allergens. This means their hams and turkey breasts do not contain gluten. www.honeybakedonline.com

If you would like to participate in the cookie exchange please bring 2 dozen ready to share packets of cookies. Put several cookies each in small baggies or cling wrap. For each 2 dozen you bring you should get 2 dozen back. Please also bring a copy of your recipe for everyone to check ingredients for other allergies.

Stark County Celiac Support Group

The Stark County Celiac Support Group meets the first Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at Calvary Presbyterian Church at
1525 Shorb Ave. NW, Canton, Ohio.

November 6 Thanksgiving Dinner
We will meet on Thursday, November 6th at 6:30pm and will have our annual Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone is asked to bring a dish to share. If you didn’t sign up at the last meeting, be sure to call and let Ginny know what you will bring.
Paper plates, plastic ware, cups and napkins will be provided. What people signed up to bring so far: turkey, mashed potatoes/gravy, sweet potatoes, vegetables, desserts, dressing, and fruit. It’s the best GF buffet in town!
· Please bring the recipe for your dish so folks with allergies will know what’s in it.
· We are taking a donation for paper products as we are running low.
· We are asking everyone to contribute paper products or personal hygiene products for the church’s holiday collection. (TP, paper towels, Kleenex, deodorant, tooth brushes/paste, shampoo, soap) You can bring your donation to the November or December meeting.

We have reserved the Considine Building at Akron Children's Hospital for a Celiac Disease Conference, "Focus On Food" to be held Sunday, April 26, 2009. If you are interested in working on the planning committee please contact Therese at tsemonin1@neo.rr.com
We plan to hold a family oriented program divided into several different age groups. The focus will be on food so we are organizing a gluten free food fair to take place as part of this conference.
Watch for further developments.

Please note we have changed the date from Saturday to Sunday April 26, 2009. This was due to a conflict for most of the vendors.

Dr Costas Kefalas will be speaking at Dunlap Hospital in Orville. Anyone interested in attending is welcome. The Akron area Celiac Support Group is meeting in the parking lot at 570 White Pond Drive between 5-5:15 that evening to carpool/caravan to Orville for the meeting. We have several new members in the support group. I hope to put them into cars with veterans, so they can get a little one on one support during the drive.

Bread Baking Contest

Last January we started a gluten free bread baking contest. We are encouraging each support group to hold a local contest sometime before the April Conference. Then we will have the winners of each area contest compete for the Northeast Ohio Bread Champion. Details will follow.

Here is my first adventure into the digital realm. We need a way to communicate with each other. With this site we can share information about each of the Celiac Support groups in our area, about interesting events, foods we love or hate...

The only medical information we will share on this site will come from or be reviewed by one of our cherished physician or dietitian advisors.

The Akron are support group advisors are Dr. Costas Kefalas, Dr. Manzoor Qadir and Dr. Emory Collins. Our dietitian advisor is Kelly, but we also communicate with Sally and Trisha for their expertise.

October is Celiac Awareness month. There are many Celiac supporting events happening around Ohio this month.

Akron Area CSA Chapter 111
Saturday October 11- Gluten free food tasting and speakers at Mustard Seed Market/ both locations/12-4. If you did not get the flyer let me know. Good speakers at 1 and 3, the speaker at 2 is Therese. Please share any favorite gluten free recipies that I can take give out.

Sunday October 12- Support group meeting will be on planning for the spring Celiac conference in Akron. Anyone who would like to take part in the planning process please come, classroom D&E at Children's Hospital, 2-4pm

November 8-** Columbus Event ** Columbus Celiac Conference. Several of us are carpooling. We will probably go down that morning and return in the evening.

November 9-Support group meeting at Akron Children's classroom D&E. Sharing of information from Columbus meeting

December 14- Support group meeting Holiday pot luck, cookie exchande, crafts for the kids more details as planning continues. Akron Children's classroom D&E

Starting in January we will have a little different set up for meetings. We will still have meetings every month. I would like your input to the plan.
The new plan being considered is to hold mew patient orientation every other month- so new patients don't need to wait long to come to a meeting. On the alternate months plan speakers, activities and more advanced stuff than we do at most meetings.
Also would you prefer a different day and time for the meetings? This is set for 2008 on Sundays, but we could change with the new year if it would be more convenient.

Dr Kefalas is arranging to bring Dr Green in to do Grand Rounds at Summa, possibly April or May. We are trying to set up having him talk to patients at a luncheon meeting the same day. Watch for info as it becomes available.

April 25- Akron Celiac Conference. Date is not yet set in stone. Anyone in the support group interensted in helping please come to the October 12 meeting. We will have the date set by then.

Note: This is a reminder to mark your calendars- Details about next Sunday's meeting (October 19 in Parma) as well as other time sensitive information will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, I hope you will take advantage of the gluten free taste fair at the Mustard Seed Market in Solon on Saturday to try different gluten free products so you "don't waste your money" on things you do not like. (In the past Mustard Seed has offered shoppers 10% off on purchases made on the day of a gluten free event. Although I cannot guarantee they will offer the discount on Saturday- it is a good bet.)
